About Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT)

What is it?

Skin cancer is unpleasant anywhere, but it’s especially troublesome where aesthetics are concerned, such as the face, head, and neck. This includes non-life-threatening skin lesions like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and actinic keratosis (AK). Superficial radiation therapy (SRT) is ideal for these types of lesions. Though the radiation used in this treatment penetrates only 5 mm below the skin (which preserves the healthy tissue surrounding the cancerous area while destroying the harmful cells), it’s strong enough to hinder the ability of cancer to spread by altering the DNA of the cell it inhabits. As a result, the cancerous tissues are starved to death.

What is it?

IGSRT is an advanced, non-invasive treatment option for certain types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It combines imaging technology with superficial radiation to precisely target cancerous cells while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

What is Mohs Surgery?

Named after the surgeon who pioneered the procedure in the 1930’s, Mohs Surgery is a specialized procedure used to treat skin cancers by removing the cancer layer by layer, until all cancerous layers are gone.

The purpose of Mohs Surgery is to remove the least amount of tissue with the highest possible cure rate. It is performed in an outpatient clinic under local anesthesia.

Why Mohs Surgery?

Many skin cancers are often described as having “roots” that extend beyond the apparent borders of the tumor.

Mohs Surgery has a cure rate that approaches 99% for primary (never treated) basal cell carcinomas and 95% for recurrent tumors.
