Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT and IGSRT)

May 24, 2018 by westdermcorp

About Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT)

What is it?

Skin cancer is unpleasant anywhere, but it’s especially troublesome where aesthetics are concerned, such as the face, head, and neck. This includes non-life-threatening skin lesions like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and actinic keratosis (AK). Superficial radiation therapy (SRT) is ideal for these types of lesions. Though the radiation used in this treatment penetrates only 5 mm below the skin (which preserves the healthy tissue surrounding the cancerous area while destroying the harmful cells), it’s strong enough to hinder the ability of cancer to spread by altering the DNA of the cell it inhabits. As a result, the cancerous tissues are starved to death.

What to expect

The superficial radiation therapy experts at our center have the experience and training necessary to perform this treatment skillfully, safely, and effectively. If you’re undergoing an SRT procedure with one of our specialists, you can expect a quick and virtually painless treatment.

After the procedure

Superficial radiation therapy has the same high success rates as other skin cancer treatments, including surgery. After the procedure, you can expect little to no scarring, little downtime, and quick healing and recovery.

About Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy (IGSRT)

What is it?

IGSRT is an advanced, non-invasive treatment option for certain types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It combines imaging technology with superficial radiation to precisely target cancerous cells while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

The treatment is designed for patients who may not be good candidates for surgical options, such as Mohs surgery, due to medical conditions, the location of the lesion, or personal preference. It is particularly effective for areas like the nose, ears, scalp, and other cosmetically sensitive regions.

Mohs Surgery

What is Mohs Surgery?

Named after the surgeon who pioneered the procedure in the 1930’s, Mohs Surgery is a specialized procedure used to treat skin cancers by removing the cancer layer by layer, until all cancerous layers are gone.

The purpose of Mohs Surgery is to remove the least amount of tissue with the highest possible cure rate. It is performed in an outpatient clinic under local anesthesia.

With four surgeons who are all fellowship trained and board-certified, as well as locations in Dallas, Plano, and Irving, help for your skin cancer is just a short drive away.

Why Mohs Surgery?

Many skin cancers are often described as having “roots” that extend beyond the apparent borders of the tumor.

By using the Mohs Surgery technique, the borders or margins of the tumor are checked to remove these “roots”. This allows for a higher cure rate than other techniques.

Mohs Surgery has a cure rate that approaches 99% for primary (never treated) basal cell carcinomas and 95% for recurrent tumors.

Is Mohs Surgery Right For you?

Mohs Surgery has the highest cure rate of all therapies.

In the video below, watch Dr. Posten and his patients talk about why Mohs Surgery was right for them, and their experience at Advanced Dermasurgery Associates. This is a question to be answered by your doctor or dermatologist after an examination of the area in question.

Mohs Surgery is typically recommended for individuals who have been diagnosed with a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma – and in some cases, other conditions.

If you notice an irregular mole or freckle, you may have skin cancer. It is important that you visit a dermatologist every year so that he or she is familiar with your skin and can easily identify any abnormalities that may be developing.

If you are concerned about an irregular dark spot on your skin, you should schedule an appointment with your dermatologist immediately – especially since many dermatologists tend to have busy schedules and may need to schedule your visit a few weeks out.

If you’ve been diagnosed with skin cancer, you are facing many decisions that can be overwhelming and hard. We have your best care in mind and want to talk through all of your options.

With locations in Dallas, Plano, and Irving, Advanced Dermasurgery Associates can help to treat your skin cancer. To find out if Mohs surgery is right for you, make your appointment today with one of our four leading Mohs surgeons.
