Care after surgery is just as important as the surgery itself.
After the outpatient procedure, we will recommend post-operative care based on the size of the resulting wound.
The area may need stitches, a skin graft or flap, or referral to another specialist to reconstruct the area. This is decided on a case by case basis. Your Mohs surgeon may also recommend products specially formulated to speed healing and reduce bruising of the skin.
In rare cases, complications may occur, dependent on the unique case of your wound. For this reason, it is best for you to remain in the area for seven days following the procedure.
It will also be important for you to be prepared to rest and allow yourself to heal for the weeks following the procedure. Mild or moderate discomfort, bruising or swelling often last for 1-3 days after the procedure. To protect the wound, it will also be important for you to refrain from exercise and lifting heavy objects for two weeks.
The staff at Advanced Dermasurgery Associates will provide detailed post-operative instructions, personalized for your specific case.
Your Mohs surgeon will ask for you to return to the office 7-10 days after the procedure to evaluate the progress of the healing, and to remove stitches if applicable. Advanced Dermasurgery Associates has convenient locations in Dallas, Las Colinas & Highland Village.
Once the tumor is removed, you will be left with a surgical wound. Our doctors will discuss the repair options with you and make recommendations on the option that will achieve the best cosmetic and functional result. These options may include:
This involves pulling the wound edges together and closing the wound with surgical stitches. If this option is recommended to you, then the stitching usually takes approximately 1-2 hours to complete. You will need to return to have the stitches removed, usually about a week after the procedure.
This option involves taking skin from another part of the body and stitching it into place to close the wound. You should not get the skin graft wet during this time. It may be recommended that you bathe using a sponge bath during this week. The stitches on the skin graft usually need to be removed in 1 week.
This process involves surgically cutting and pulling skin from an area adjacent to the wound and stitching it in place. Usually you will need to return in 1 week to have the stitches taken out. Sometimes skin flaps may require a second stage or additional surgery to complete which usually occurs 2-3 weeks after the procedure.
Our doctors may recommend that you see another surgical specialist to discuss repairing the surgical wound after Mohs Surgery. They may require that you meet with them prior to surgery. Our office will make arrangements with the other surgical specialists offices to schedule your surgery dates. You may be having surgery with the specialist on the same day or several days after your Mohs Surgery procedure. Sometimes the surgical specialist will require that you do not eat the day of the surgery if your repair will be done in a hospital operating room and require general anesthesia.
