Do I Need Mohs Surgery?

Dallas mohs surgery candidate requirements

This is a question to be answered by your doctor or dermatologist after an examination of the area in question.

Mohs surgery is typically recommended for individuals who have been diagnosed with a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma – and in some cases, other conditions (see the full list of conditions treated by Mohs surgery).

If you notice an irregular mole or freckle, you may have skin cancer. It is important that you visit a dermatologist every year so that he or she is familiar with your skin and can easily identify any abnormalities that may be developing. If you are concerned about an irregular dark spot on your skin, you should schedule an appointment with your dermatologist immediately – especially since many dermatologists tend to have busy schedules and may need to schedule your visit a few weeks out.

Some varieties of skin cancer can move quickly.

If this is your first time having Mohs Surgery, our doctors would like to meet with you prior to having the procedure done. This will allow our doctors to examine your skin cancer, obtain a medical history and determine whether the technique of Mohs Surgery would be the best treatment for your skin cancer. It will also allow you to learn about the procedure and ask any questions that you may have. We have convenient locations in Dallas & Highland Village.

Alternatives To Mohs Surgery

Since types, sizes, locations and stages of skin cancer are so varied, related treatments are varied, too. Your dermatologist or plastic surgeon will determine the most appropriate treatment for your specific condition. Alternative cancer treatments include:

  • Simple excision
  • Curettage and electrodesiccation
  • Topical Chemotherapy
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Topical Creams
  • Immunotherapy
  • Hormone Therapy
  • IPT – Insulin Potentiation Therapy

  • Cryosurgery
  • Laser Surgery

The best way to determine if you need Mohs surgery is to have an evaluation by a physician. Contact us for more information.
